Besides the Citroen DS4 DS5, Citroen has also brought the new Citroen DS4 Racing concept car to the Geneva Motor Show, which has been developed by the engineers at Citroen Racing. Citroen’s DS lineup may grow yet again if the following concept gets the green light; the Citroen Racing concept car will surely have fans of the French hatchback jaw-dropped and drooling. The Citroen DS4 Racing concept car is based on the current Citroen DS4 five-door with a long list of modifications that showcases the brand’s success and expertise as a World Rally Championship competitor.
Citroen Racing’s engineers have modified the Citroen DS4 chassis and running gear with the utmost precision. The Citroen DS4 Racing Concept is coming with some racing features like the 35 mm lowered chassis, enhanced aerodynamics with a front bumper panel, air diffuser, lower-body belt line and wing extension, all of them finished in a matte grey.
The Citroen DS4 Racing gets a wider track front and rear and has been lowered 35 mm with different suspension, 4-piston-caliper 380mm disc brakes, and larger diameter 19-inch wheels and 235/40 tires. Under the hood, the Citroen DS4 Racing concept is powered by a 1.6 liter turbo engine, generating 256 HP. Another stand out feature of the Citroen DS4 Racing concept is the textured-effect matt grey paint, which catches the light to further enhance the lines of the car.
The Citroen DS4 colours are stylish and modern, ideal for a sports car. Further exterior refinements include a two-tone roof and two-tone wheels with a special Citroen DS4 Racing design. No production plans have been announced, so the DS4 price has not been considered.
Perhaps most remarkable of all is that despite what is expected to be extreme performance, the DS4R emits 155 grams of CO2 per kilometer. If the Citroen DS4 Racing go on sale, it will likely have a limited production run like the smaller, two-door hatchback DS3 Racing sold a few years ago where only 1000 examples of the DS3 Racing hatch were produced.
Citroen DS4 review
Competitors Citroen DS4
The Citroen DS4 is the second model launched in Citroen’s bold new line-up of up market alternatives to its mainstream offerings. Citroen DS4 follows the much-lauded DS3 onto the market, but doesn’t share the same rival-focused design brief. Where the smaller hatchback was conceived as a straight competitor to BMW’s, Mini, Citroen claims the C4-derived Citroen DS4 specs has no direct rivals as it combines a coupe profile with five-door practicality and the raised driving position of a crossover.
The manufacturer insists the new model represents a redefinition of the segment boundaries, but in truth the Citroen DS4 is just another addition to the already fluid styling conventions of the increasingly voguish family hatchback class. Which isn’t to suggest that the Citroen DS4 is lacking in the looks department?
Considering the comparative strength of competition at that level (VW Golf, Ford Focus, Alfa Romeo Giulietta) Citroen’s audacious attempt to produce something different is laudable, but ultimately the Citroen DS4 doesn’t feel special enough to successfully span the different segments it borrows from.
