The Mercedes SLS Roadster AMG was unveiled by Mercedes-Benz via press release on May 5, 2011. Mercedes SLS Roadster retains the same specifications, dimensions and drivetrain as the Coupe but is a more traditional convertible with a power folding fabric top and conventional doors. Unlike its historical role model, however, the SLS AMG won’t be entirely replaced by the Mercedes SLS Roadster version. Rather, it will be complemented by the Mercedes SLS Roadster, with both cars being sold alongside each other.

The Mercedes SLS Roadster version of the SLS AMG, of course, loses not only its fixed top, but also its gull wing doors. The Mercedes SLS Roadster doors cut down deeper into the flanks and are operated with utterly conventional, Mercedes-sedan-style door handles, as opposed to the coupe’s pop-out pulls. In addition, the Mercedes SLS Roadster doors stretch farther forward than on the coupe, but the impression of an extremely long hood is still intact.

This Mercedes SLS Roadster and the CL65 AMG 40th Anniversary Edition are the only road going Mercedes-Benz with the AMG Alubeam Silver paint available, at an extra cost of €11,900 in Germany. Other colors include both metallic as matte colors, such as Designo Magno Kashmir, the matte paint known from the 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG IWC edition. The Mercedes SLS Roadster has a rear wing which will pop up at high speeds for stability and handling, and when braking.

The Mercedes SLS Roadster AMG standard transmission is AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed dual-clutch semi-automatic transmission through a lightweight carbon fiber driveshaft in a transaxle arrangement. Selectable driving modes in the Mercedes SLS Roadster include “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) or “M” (Manual) but a true manual transmission is not available. While AMG is starting to replace its high-revving, naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 with the twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 (as seen in the S- and CL-classes), we suspect that the Mercedes SLS Roadster will keep the crazy 563-hp 6.2, which produces 479 lb-ft of torque.

It is not only a trademark engine for the SLS, it fits the character of this Mercedes SLS Roadster exceedingly well—and, with the top down, you will be even better able to listen to this engine’s awesome soundtrack. With structural reinforcements and the convertible-top mechanism no doubt adding weight, the Mercedes SLS Roadster performance could drop slightly.

Competitors Mercedes SLS Roadster

Mercedes has caused history to repeat itself as they have come out with a roadster version for one of their popular coupes, the Mercedes SLS Roadster. In terms of design, the 2012 Mercedes SLS Roadster version will remain faithful to the coupe version. As with the coupe version, the 2012 Mercedes SLS Roadster will target models like the Ferrari 458 Italia and the McLaren MP4-12C in their convertible versions. The 458 Italia Spyder will feature the same 4,499 cc V8 engine found in the coupe version which delivers 570 HP at 9,000 rpm and 398 lb-ft of torque at 6000 rpm and is mated to an F1 dual-clutch gearbox.

Clearly, the performance for this Spyder is that much more than in the Mercedes SLS Roadster. However, the 458 Italia Spyder will probably cost more than the Mercedes SLS Roadster price since the coupe is priced at $225,000. This leaves the Mercedes SLS Roadster at a minimum of $25,000 cheaper than the Ferrari. As for the McLaren MP4-12C, the company already has plans to offer a roadster version in the next few years. This model beats the Mercedes SLS Roadster once again in terms of performance, but the price tag increases as well.
